Hilton cause shock

CHESTER & District Sunday League newcomers AFC Hilton continue to impress after they sprung the suprise of the Dale Recycling Solutions League Cup first round.

Sitting pretty at the top of Chester Chronicle Section B, Hilton hit new heights with a comprehensive 3-0 win at Concorde Trophies Section A strugglers Highfield Quinplex given to them by Danny Russell, Mark Weir and Dan Turley.

The closest tie of the day came between Waverton and Piper.

The visitors led 3-2 but it was Waverton who ran out 5-4 winners thanks to a four-goal show from lethal Jamie O’Brian and a penalty from Chris Farrell. The hosts had to endure a few nervy moments, though, after a 25-yard free kick from Piper set up a grandstand finish.

FC Bull & Stirrup needed extra-time to win another all-Section B encounter 3-1 at Carlton, for whom Lee Reid was on target.

FC Blacon were the big hitters as they produced a second-half super-show to win 8-2 at home to top-flight rivals Tarvin Rex with goals from Lee Benson (2), Neil Chard (2), Andy Bale, Alfie Cheers, Tom Sheldon and Leon Jones.

Robbie Dean scored twice – one direct from a corner kick – and Craig Sudlow once as Corner Pin LG won 3-0 at AFC Werburghs.

Another Section A side through to the next round are Dee Rangers after their 5-3 victory at Dee Rangers, for whom Jamie Kelly, Peter O’Tool and Tony Harris netted. Robert Kennelly (2), Jack Oakden (2) and Mick Costello shared the Dee strikes.

A Martin Kjer screamer and a Adam Lloyd spot-kick brought Watergates a welcome 2-1 home triumph over Rileys, who were in front until the second half. Unlike team-mate Lloyd, Andy Riddle was unable to keep his cool from 12 yards as he fired a penalty high and wide.

Three matches were played in Section A with Saltney Ferry opening up a three-point lead at the top with a 4-2 home success over Western Rangers.

Hitman Chris Herbert (3) and Craig Rowlands were the Saltney hotshots with Richie Deponeo and Neil Tasker reducing the arrears.

Thanks to second-half efforts from Chris Williams and Nathan Freeman, Vicars Cross Dynamos moved up to second with a 2-0 win at Dee Miller Athletic.

Lache Park BA cruised to a 4-1 victory at Upton Youth Centre with Adie Callahan (2), Scott Chesworth and Lee McGovern settling matters before Matty Edwards notched a consolation.

Magnificent seven

THERE is just no stopping Chester Nomads in West Cheshire League Division Two.

John Cadwallader’s on-fire side maintained their unbeaten start and made it seven wins on the spin as they won a ding-dong battle at home to New Brighton 3-2 on Saturday.

Mark Crossan and Keiron Smith twice put second-placed Nomads in front but twice they were pegged back until Martin Gaulton crashed in what proved to be the winning goal of the game 10 minutes from time.

Also going great guns are Division One high flyers Helsby.

Like Nomads, they are yet to taste defeat so far this season and they moved within three points of top spot with a 2-0 triumph at Christleton.

Gary Tyrell and Danny Davies – against his former team – stuck to ensure the third-placed Green Machine rolled on, but Christleton boss Graham Vile quite rightly reserved praise for his battling side, who finished the match with 10-men after Paul Hollifield was sent-off.

Blacon Youth Club picked up their first point of the campaign as they drew their basement battle at Cammell Laird Reserves 1-1.

Matty Pierce equalised for Blacon, who came close to winning it late on when Neil Field headed over.

Richard Smart rescued a point for Upton AA as they snatched a 1-1 draw at home to Ellesmere Port.

Upton’s reserves fared better in their Division Three clash at Ellesmere Port’s second string as they left Whitby with a 1-0 win in the bag.

Christleton Reserves matched that scoreline at AFC Bebington Athletic Reserves thanks to Chris Pitt’s strike.

Capenhurst Villa Reserves were thrashed 7-0 at Manor Athletic.

Capenhurst’s first team fared better, though, as they won 1-0 at home to Mallaby to move up to sixth in Division One.

Graeme Davidson was the Capenhurst hero.
