THE curtain came down on the local senior football season on Friday when Waggon & Horses beat holders Highfield Athletic 3-2 in a thrilling Chester & District FA Challenge Cup final.

The clash between the Blacon rivals seemed as good as over at the break after Danny Goodwin, James Henry and Chris Williams fired Waggon & Horses into a commanding three-goal advantage.

Yet desperate to avoid an unwanted hat-trick of losses at the Exacta Stadium, Highfield fought back and were given a way into the match when their opponents were reduced to 10 men.

Ross Broadbent converted the resulting penalty and when Chris Larsen reduced the deficit further, the great comeback was on.

But Highfield – who had lost two cup finals the previous weekend at the home of Chester FC – could not find their way past inspired goalkeeper Carl Hallal.

A tough Cheshire League season for Tarporley Victoria came to an end on Saturday when they lost 4-1 at fellow strugglers FC Billinge to ensure they finish second-from-bottom in Division One.
