THE future of goalkeeping is in safe hands thanks to Tranmere Rovers legend John Achterberg.

The Dutch stopper has been passing on his skills to youngsters from Ellesmere Port and beyond at weekly coaching sessions.

Staged at Flint Town United's Cae y Castell stadium in Flintshire, the sessions have proved a hit for budding custodians from the Port, Chester, Wirral and North Wales.

Fully-qualified coach Achterberg, who was released by Tranmere Rovers last week and is now being linked to a move to Chester City, brought his academy to Flint two years ago. Young keepers travel from far and wide to take part.

Achterberg promises keepers will leave the course having improved a whole range of skills, including:

* Footwork

* Handling and shot-stopping

* Technique

* Positional play

* Dealing with crosses

* One-on-one situations

* Distribution

* Recovery saves

* Decision-making

Achterberg, 35, said: 'We're now coming to the end of our second year of the course and it is going really well.

'It's great to see kids improving all the time and it's a joy to pass on what I have learned.'

The 6ft 1in stopper, who is assisted by former Chester youth keeper Michael Carr, will also use his contacts in the game to tip off professional and semi-professionals clubs about rising stars.

He added: 'It's all about helping the youngsters make the step up, whether it be Tranmere, Chester or Shrewsbury or even clubs like Flint.'
