ALSAGER Town manager Greg Clowes is eyeing a top-eight finish to his team's first season in the First Division.

He was pleased with the 0-0 draw at seventh-placed Rossendale on Saturday, insisting the Lancashire club are one of the best teams his side had met this season.

He said: 'I'm always pleased to take points off the top five or six teams in the league. If we can beat the teams in the bottom half of the table, the top eight will be a good finish.

'We've not been able to put out our strongest team in recent weeks which hasn't helped but I'm not using that as an excuse.

'We're having a good spell and I think we can push on as none of the teams have frightened us.'

Clowes was hoping to bolster his squad with the loan signings of Witton Albion wingers Ally Brown and Tristan Hamilton-Hendricks before Saturday's visit of bottom side Bridlington Town , but contractual wranglings have left the deals all but dead.

Clowes explained: 'We tried to get the two Witton lads in before the Rossendale game but we've hit a brick wall. We've also got a few top players missing, like Dean Stokes and Steve Elks.'

He added: 'We got an exceptional 4-0 win at Bridlington at the start of the season but the fact they are bottom of the league will mean nothing on Saturday.'

Town were at Cammell Laird last night.
