WINSFORD produced their best performance and result of the season on Wednesday.

They spoiled the perfect home record of the Wirral big spenders who seem set on emulating the achievements of Vauxhall Motors.

After absorbing early pressure United settled down to control the match. For the first 15 minutes the United goal was under siege and only a series of fine saves by Matt Conkie kept the scoreline blank - at least until the 27th minute.

A cross from the right dropped between the defence and Conkie and ex-Vics man Jamie Maguire stole in at the post to slot the ball home.

But Blues recovered from the setback and went on to dominate proceedings.

Stuart Wellstead, revelling in his midfield role, broke down the left just before the break and his shot was spilled by goalkeeper Leon Bimpson for Rob Hanley to steer home the rebound.

Hanley was unlucky to see a header graze the bar on the stroke of half-time and United resumed in inspired form. Lairds were second best and taken by surprise.

Winsford took the lead in the 67th minute when Well-stead carved his way through four defenders and his 20-yard blast was unstoppable.

They were only denied victory in the 77th minute by a free-kick that was driven hard and low and central defender Anthony Sheehan diverted the ball into the net.

But still United might have claimed the points with late chances falling to Chris Melia and Hanley.

WINSFORD: Conkie; Tier, Chambers, Marsh, Stanton; Atwell (Quinn 75), Booth (Williams 45), Harrison, Wellstead (Hurley 85); Hanley, Melia.
