Chester FC will host Championship club Middlesbrough in the FA Cup third round, if the Blues can overcome Barnsley in next week's second round replay.

BT Sport will be screening that rematch on Tuesday, December 16 (7.45pm) after the sides drew 0-0 at Oakwell on Sunday and the prospect of a home game against an ex-Premier League club in the next round provides an extra incentive.

Although not the glamour draw the clubs might have hoped for, Middlesbrough have a strong top flight pedigree over the past 20 years.

Boro were relegated from the Premier League in 2009 but are well positioned for promotion this season, sitting fourth in the Championship under manager Aitor Karanka.

Third round ties will be played over the weekend of January 3 and 4.

Chester faced Middlesbrough at the same stage of the competition in January 1997, the most recent meeting between the clubs.

An expensively-assembled Boro team managed by Bryan Robson battered Kevin Ratcliffe's side 6-0 in front of 18,684 fans at the Riverside Stadium.

Blues midfielder Kevin Noteman blasted a penalty over the crossbar and goals from Fabrizio Ravanelli (2), Craig Hignett, Neil Cox, Mikkel Beck and Phil Stamp meant there was little to cheer for the 2,500-strong travelling support.

Back in 1966, Mike Metcalf and Elfed Morris scored against Boro in the FA Cup first round but Chester ended up losing 5-2 in front of a 7,607 crowd at Sealand Road.
