CHESTER'S player of the season will be honoured before tomorrow's home match against Peterborough.

Votes have been cast by fans over the last fortnight and the winner is widely expected to be one of two players - keeper John Danby or centre-back Dave Artell.

Both players this week began talks over new deals as manager Mark Wright seeks to reward them for their consistency.

Danby, 23, still has a year left on his existing contract but Artell, 26, is due to become a free agent this summer.

Wright said: 'John Danby was brought on here as a number two but he's had to step to the fore-front and he's done exceptionally well and proved his worth. He's getting better and is our most improved player.

'Dave Artell has not missed many games and has always been there. He has done very well.'

Wright added: 'It has become a two-horse race because Jon Walters, Gregg Blundell and Roberto Martinez have gone. 'Otherwise, it would have been five or more.

'If Jon would have been here, he would have been a cert to be in the running. The crowd loved him. Roberto was a big, big fans' favourite and Gregg would have been in there as well.'

Artell heads the list of players with the most Chronicle man-of-the-match awards this season with seven.

The other winners are: Jon Walters (4), Ashley Westwood (4), Sean Hessey (4), Simon Marples (3), Paul Linwood (3), Gregg Blun-dell (3), Alan Kearney (3), Lee Steele (3), Jamie Hand (2), Simon Yeo (2), John Danby (2), Laurence Wilson (2), Paul Rutherford (2), Stephen Vaughan (1), Dean Bennett (1), Ryan Semple (1), Chris Holroyd (1), Bradley Maylett (1).
