FORMER Liverpool Academy youngster Alex Whittle has signed a three-year contract with Dunfermline.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder had been with the Nike Football Academy, a group of unattached players who play in trial games around the UK, and impressed Pars boss Jim Jefferies.

“The boy showed up well,” said Jefferies. “He impressed us so we went to sign him and Livingston had made a late move so it proved he caught the eye of other people.”

Whittle was let go by Liverpool at the start of 2011 after spending 11 years on the club’s books.

The Reds recently parted company with a number of this season’s under-18s side who weren’t offered new deals. Lewis Hatch, Matty Regan, Josh Sumner, Joe Rafferty and Peter Aylmer have been released.
