BENNY Phillips, who quit Witton Albion, two years ago has returned as assistant manager to Jim Vince.

'There will be some people who don't like it because of the way I left,' said Phillips. 'But I played for Witton, captained and managed the team and have a feeling for the club.

'It's a different title and a different role, but I'll have my say and Jim will have the final word.'

His resignation caused disruption at Wincham Park coming only three games, all defeats, at the start of the 2003-04 season and 24 hours before a game.

Vince said: 'From my point of view it is a fantastic appointment. I needed someone with knowledge and experience and Benny stands out. He has got contacts and his finger is on the pulse.'

Latterly Phillips has been assistant manager to Paul Ogden at Leek Town and was in charge at Chadderton when Vince made the call.

While Vince is officially caretaker manager he is being allowed a lot of leeway by the Witton board with the latest departures including 12-goal striker Ben Jones.

But he has finally left because he does not drive and can no longer get from his West Yorkshire home.

He came to games with Andy Lee, who has also left, to join Worksop Town. Jones is expected to sign for Harrogate Town.

Vince moved quickly to replace Lee, albeit temporarily, by taking Chris Gaghan on a month's loan from Northwich Vics.

Vince said: 'Chris is an exciting high energy player who gives us a different option.

'We did everything we could to keep Ben Jones here and will retain his registration.

'The board have told me to get on with the job, but there is no point in me doing unless I try to make something happen and improve the team rather than just keep it ticking over.

'I am not here just to make the numbers up. I want to make my mark as to what I can do as a coach and I feel there are already improvements. Our set plays, for instance, are better.'

Vince is also making seven-days notice of approach for two other players, a defender and an experienced striker.

Albion are at Lincoln United on Saturday, seven days after the first clash ended in acrimony, but with Witton 3-0 victors.
