LIAM Coyne, United's new 6ft 7in defender, did not rise to the challenge at Ashton.

His height was a constant worry for the home side but he secured Winsford's first ever win at Ashton, not with his head, but with his left foot.

In the 73rd minute Lee Duckworth's corner was cleared only as far as Coyne and he coolly drilled the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

It was not until 15 minutes into the second half that Ashton created a chance but Danny Smith wasted a free header.

United had the openings to have won handsomely the best falling late on to Rob Hopley, but his lob landed wide. UNITED: Mottershead; Jarrett, Marsh, Coyne, Stewart; Hanlon, Quinn, Watson, Duckworth; Hopley, McAllister (Weir 75). Att: 110.
