ANDY CARROLL has been called up by Roy Hodgson for England's friendly match against Italy in Geneva next week.

The 23-year-old striker is the only Liverpool player selected in an experimental-looking squad, with club colleagues Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson and Stewart Downing all rested by Hodgson at the request of Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.

Hodgson has handed first senior call-ups to Tottenham duo Steven Caulker and Jake Livermore, as well as Chelsea starlet Ryan Bertrand.

There were recalls for Manchester United's Michael Carrick, Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge and Adam Johnson of Manchester City.

Carroll has been persistently linked with a move away from Anfield this summer, and is yet to feature competitively under Rodgers.

The former Newcastle man could come face-to-face with his new Reds teammate Fabio Borini, who has been named in Cesare Prandelli's squad for the game.

The £10.4m man, who marked his Anfield debut with a goal against FC Gomel on Thursday night, will be looking to win his second cap for the Azzurri, in what is a repeat of the Euro 2012 quarter-final, which Italy won on penalties.
