West Cheshire AC pair James McMahon and Olivia Montez-Brown took top spots at the North West Schools Regional Combined Events Championships.

McMahon won the intermediate boys octathlon with 4,148 points and Montez- Brown posted 4,322 points to win the senior girls heptathlon.

McMahon long jumped 6.07m, threw the discus 25.80m, launched the javelin 35.13m, rounded the 400m in 54.7 seconds, cleared 1.62m in the high jump, hit 10.66m in the shot, and clocked five minutes 15.6 seconds in the 1500m.

Montez-Brown led from start to finish, posting 15.4 seconds in the 100m hurdles, clearing 1.53m in the high jump, hitting 9.10m in the shot put, clocking 26.9 seconds in the 200m, long jumping 5.43m, launching the javelin 28.99m, and rounding the 800m in 2:37.7.

West Cheshire AC’s Maisie Tipping competed in the junior girls pentathlon and scored 2,221 points for 17th position with 12.3 seconds in the 75m hurdles, 7.65m in the shot, 1.26m in the high jump, 4.33m in the long jump and 2:51.5 in the 800m.

Montez-Brown is one of eight West Cheshire AC members who have been selected for this weekend’s English Schools Track and Field Championships.

Isobel Griffin Morris, Emma Howe, Georgia Barlow, Kelly Baker, Sophie Percival, Emily Ball and Matthew Pagan will all feature at the two-day event being held at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.

Montez-Brown will compete in the senior girls long jump, while Griffin Morris, from Christleton High, will compete in the junior girls discus, and Howe, from Tarporley High, will be in action in the junior girls javelin.

Barlow, from Ellesmere Port Catholic High, lines up in the intermediate girls 300m, and West Cheshire College’s Baker will compete in the senior girls shot put.

Percival, from Whitby High, will participate in the senior girls javelin, and Ball, from Shropshire, takes part in the shot put.

Pagan, from Chester Catholic High, will line up in the intermediate boys 400m.

Georgia Barlow warmed up for the English Schools Track and Field Championships with a record-breaking 300m personal best.

The West Cheshire AC sprinter clocked 40.8 seconds, breaking the track record at the Sheepmount Stadium in Carlisle at the latest round of the Youth Development League.

Barlow ended her day anchoring the West Cheshire AC 4x100m team of Katie Clarke, Victoria Smith and Vanessa Ozoemelam to victory.

Matthew Pagan won the under 20 men’s 200m in 23.0 seconds and finished second in his 100m in 11.8 seconds, while Sophie Percival won the U20 women’s shot (10.22m) alongside B winner Laura Jones (5.30m), and Sophie won the javelin (34.71m) alongside Georgina Moulton who was second B with 14.29m.

Victoria Smith won the U17s women’s B 300m (45.5) and was third in the 100m (14.0), and Katie Clarke won the U17s 1500m (5:07.2) and was third in her 800m (2:29.6).

Emily Ball won the U17s women’s discus (35.03m), javelin (27.26m) and shot (13.01m), while Vanessa Ozoemelam was second in the high jump (1.30m) and third in the B 200m (29.6).

Kirsty Done finished third in the U20s women’s 100m (14.8) and was fourth in the 200m (32.4), while Georgina Moulton was second in the B 100m (15.3), and third in the discus (14.78m) alongside Laura Jones who was second in the B discus (10.95m).

The weekend was another successful one for Chester Triathletes in both short and long-distance events.

At the Cholmondeley Castle Triathlons, there were many successes, particularly in the Sprint Plus and Sprint events. In the Sprint Plus (800m swim, 40km bike and 8k run),  Ben Birks won outright, John Wilding and Christina Roach won their age groups, whilst in the Sprint (400m/22km/4k), John Robb and Rosemary Symms won their age groups.

There was good weather for the Llandudno sea triathlon, where  Chester Tri members finished in the prizes. In the women's standard distance race, Alison Leavens was second and Claire Sutcliffe third. For the men, the fastest club finisher was Scott Whittlestone, who was 12th overall, and Steve Spall and Neil Phillips won their age groups.

The longest and most challenging day out of the weekend belonged to Jan Rogers, Simon McAllister and Steve Eastwood who took on the extreme iron distance Celtman triathlon –  a 3.8km Loch Swim  202km bike and 42km mountain run in Wester Ross, Scotland.

The start gun sounded at 5am and all three Chester competitors impressed, with Jan  finishing third in the women’s race in 15.35:00, while Simon was just behind her in 16.02:15 and Steve in 16.48:29.

The King’s School Junior Athletic Squad enjoyed success at a Triangular event against Bolton and Birkenhead.

They were victorious by  35 points and secured 10 out of 14 wins from  the track race. This is only the fourth time the King’s School has gained the shield in the past 29 years – and the second in the last three years.

The following Tuesday saw King’s Junior pupils receive 17 medals at the Association of Junior Independent Schools’ Athletics Championships. Gold was received by Tom Hughes, 11, of Marford (hurdles and high jump) and Sophie Williams, 11, of Denbigh (hurdles); Silver was achieved by Heather Black, 11, of Mickle Trafford (600m) and Saul Corry, 10, of Spurstow (80m) and bronze medals went to Eden Hambelton-Davies, 10, of Chirk (high jump and 600m), Raef Watts, nine, of Curzon Park (hurdles), Joe Flory, 10, of Whitchurch (150m), the U10  relay squad and the U11 relay squad.
