A BOUNDARY from the first ball of the final over gave Ellesmere Port, who were nine wickets down, a dramatic first win of the season at Sandbach on Saturday.

The hosts won the toss and batted, but while Metcalf made just four before being caught by Cheeseborough off Park (3-56), fellow opener A Williams went on to make 90 before being caught with a spectacular diving catch by Betteridge off Daniels (2-38).

J Latham hit 33 before being caught superbly by Ashton off Cheeseborough (1-28), while J De Silva was caught by Boys off Betteridge (1-45).

Tomlinson made 26 but was caught by Isaacs off Daniels and once the dangerous Williams had been removed, Sandbach slowed down.

Fox (4) was caught by Green off Park and Kendrick (3) was caught and bowled by Park, leaving Cotton (9no) and J Oddy (0no) as the hosts sportingly declared on 190-7 with two overs remaining, obviously fancying their chances.

In reply, Ashton was caught by De Silva off Oddy (3-51) while Dom Green (26) became Shawcross' (5-40) first victim.

The same bowler removed Andy Waterhouse (14) and Paul Isaacs (24) via a catch from Metcalf, while also trapping Roberts (6) lbw and bowling Cheeseborough (6).

At 93-6 with 18 overs left, Port's hopes were in the balance but Boys (49no) steered them home, forming a 60-run partnership with Park (30) before the latter fell to Oddy.

Dorrington (13) also went to Oddy via a Tomlinson catch while Fox (1-21) bowled Betteridge (2).

With Sandbach just a wicket away from victory, Port held out through Daniels (3no) and Boys, who stroked home the winning runs at the start of the final over.

Sandbach 15pts, Port 20.
