CASTROL Tessuti put their cup final woes of the previous week behind them in Tameside on Saturday as they defeated bottom club Stalybridge St Paul's to move away from the Shammah Nicholls Premier Division One relegation zone.

Captain Ian Silcock said: 'All the lads worked hard and excellent batting early on allowed us the luxury of letting Garratt hit a rapid 38 from just 12 deliveries. We also bowled excellently and this result is vital to our league standing.'

Silcock won the toss and decided to bat, with openers Martin and Steven Flanagan, but the latter was first to fall, driving to Barnes off Omar (2-60).

Garvey (48) did well before he struck one behind to Clegg off Omar, but Castrol pushed the score to 138 before Brumby was bowled by Corless (2-25).

MoM M Flanagan was next to go, another victim for Corless, spooning one up to Barnes at mid-wicket after an excellent 47, while Green departed for six after drilling the ball straight to short cover and was snatched up by Wild off Connolly (1-50).

With 10 overs remaining, Garratt upped the pace and hit Corless for four consecutive fours while also smashing two sixes out of the ground, but Evans (9) fell victim to Woods, caught at short cover.

Andy Walters (3) was then run out and with Damien Walters (1) falling in similar fashion, Silcock declared on 199-8 with Garratt unbeaten with a swashbuckling 38.

In reply, Silcock's swing removed rival skipper Dadge for 10 while Pakistani import Omar (0) edged an attempted drive from Damien Walters to Andy Walters behind the stumps.

Silcock (2-30) then removed Wild for just one run while Corless (4) was bowled by Walters (3-38), who then removed Lord for 17.

The dogged Colins (16) was caught lbw by Garratt (1-30) but Castrol's bowler was then smashed all around the ground by Barnes.

But Flanagan (2-8) sent down a full toss that was dollied up by Parry (5) to Green at point, and he then caught Clegg lbw for a duck.

The offspin of Buckley (1-26) removed Barnes (38) but with the hosts needing the points, they were unable to bat for a draw.

Mike Garvey's fourth delivery was slogged by Woods (26) but the big top-edge went skywards to the safe hands of keeper Walters, leaving Connolly unbeaten on nine and Stalybridge all out for 151.

Stalybridge took eight points and Castrol 25.
