MOORFIELD got their season off to a winning start on Saturday in the now traditional pre-season friendly against Widnes, at Beaconsfield Road.

The Moorfield Road outfit were captained by Iain Maher due to Easter holidays for 1st XI skipper John Eccleshall.

Widnes fielded a severelyweakened side, mainly comprising non first-team seniors and juniors.

The game was 40 overs per side with each being allowed to face their full allocation, however many wickets fell, so as many batsmen as possible got a look-in.

Maher elected to field on a damp track and his opening bowlers Rob Magee and Mark Greason limited Widnes to 36-3 in the first 16 overs.

Howie Fox looked impressive with 30 runs for the hosts, assisted by Richard Evans (26).

But wickets kept falling, Brian Tobin forcing errors from the Widnes lower order to finish with 3-22 off four overs.

In-form leg spinner Danny Naughton took 2-30 as Widnes closed on 125-9.

Tobin and Craig Baxter had 33 and 32 runs respectively to give Moorfield a good basis.

Naughton looked untroubled but, on 23, he played across the line and was trapped leg before.

Les Atherton (16) and Rob Magee (12) saw Moorfield home on 149-4. Pick of the Widnes bowlers was Howie Fox.

This Saturday sees Moorfield CC 1st away to Cheshire Lines, while the seconds host Wavertree 2nd at Moorfield Road.

Nets continue on Thursday at 5.30pm and weekend selection follows tonight's session.

This weekend, Widnes 1st receive Grappenhall in a warmup.

The team's first season back in the Premier Division of the Cheshire County League opens on Saturday week at Macclesfield.
