VETERAN Steve Foster carried his bat for an unbeaten half-century, which underpinned an 11-run victory for Runcorn 1st in the Meller Braggins Cheshire League at Division One rivals Davenham.

The weakened visitors scored 145-7 in their allotted 45 overs, after electing to bat, with opener Foster holding things together to finish unbeaten on 58.

He was supported by a debut 18 from former Hightown player David Moore.

Newcomer Moore's contribution was matched by Jamie Hill, while Mark Cahill hit 14 before being caught by Paul Wright off his own bowling.

Wright took 2-15 in 11 overs while R Massey returned 3-44.

Runcorn's bowlers soon made inroads with the hosts being reduced to 83-7.

However, resistance led by skipper Phil Sharples (40) saw Davenham put on 51 for the eighth wicket. Sharples was last out in a total of 134 all out.

Steve Ollerenshaw took 2-31 and Moore 2-35 but Jack Weston was the pick of Runcorn's bowlers with 4-18.

Superb fielding also contributed to a victory which earned the visitors 23 points to their hosts' five.

Runcorn Cricket Club need players for their three junior teams.

The club runs sides at Under 11s, 13s and 15s and training is on Wednesdays at Moughland Lane, from 6pm-8pm.

Youngsters of all playing abilities will be made to feel welcome.

The club does not currently have any girls' teams but could look at forming one if there is sufficient demand.

Junior co-ordinator Dave Batty said the club already has a few girls at training.
