SAUGHALL returned to winning ways on Saturday, beating Heaton Mersey Village in Division Two of the Alliance.

Batting first, the Chester hosts – who drew with Audlem the previous week – were reduced to 22-2 before Adam Griffiths (50) and James Martin (26) steadied the ship.

Given heavy rain in the build-up to the game, the track was slow and progress was attritional against a nagging attack.

Chris Andrews (43) stepped up the pace but wickets tumbled at the other end and Saughall were dismissed for a solid if unspectacular total of 149.

In reply, Heaton Mersey were on the back foot from the moment Lawrence Gotts claimed an early wicket.

Dipak Jena (3-26) was in blistering form and when Gotts (2-24) picked up his second wicket, HMV’s reply was in tatters at 23-5.

A 69 partnership elevated the visitors to 92-5 but he introduction of spin turned the game Saughall’s way with Chris Andrews (4-29) helping dismiss them for 106.

In Division One, FRODSHAM fell to a heavy defeat at Haslington.

Tommy Taker’s fine 118no propelled Haslington to 212-6sec before Frodsham replied with 107ao (Matt Williamson 34).
