ALVANLEY secured a thrilling win over Stockport on Saturday.

The Vivio County League Division Two clash saw 16-year-old Ben Tonge team up with Dave Shewring in a last-wicket partnership which saw Alvanley overcome visitors Stockport Georgians.

On a great pitch, the hosts chose to bowl first. And although wickets were hard to come by, the seamers always had a lid on the run rate.

Weir, Ainsworth and Charles worked hard but it was Shewring’s left arm spin that got Alvanley going. He had removed both openers to leave the visitors on 59-2 at drinks.

A partnership of 40 followed before Chris Charles returned to remove the pair responsible.

Further wickets for Shewring and Ainsworth were reward for decent bowling as the visitors closed on 170 -6, Shewring was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 40.

Alvanley got of to a great start in reply. Steve Charles (60) was quick to punish anything loose, with a series of boundaries through the off side. Andy Bennion (54) was more circumspect but got going soon enough and completed a second successive half-century.

Alvanley then suffered a collapse as the visitors bowled at their very best. At 155-7 and then 163-9, the hosts were in danger of throwing 25 points away.

Just as he had done the week before, teenager Tonge walked out to a high pressure situation. He calmly repelled four balls, allowing Shewring (18no), already the hitter of as towering six, to stoke the winning eight runs.
