HELSBY cricketer Sophie Ecclestone has been selected for Cheshire girls under 13s – despite the fact she is just 10 years old.
In fact the Helsby Hillside pupil was just nine when she played her first game for the team this summer.
A product of Alvanley Cricket Club’s youth team, Sophie followed her father and brother into the sport and took to it naturally.
“She has been playing for three years,” said dad Paul.
“She used to come with me on a Saturday when I play and it was something she wanted to do.
“Her natural ability and her constant desire to play mean she has improved quickly.
“She absolutely loves playing and to be picked for the under 13s already is a major achievement.”
Representing the county is becoming something of a famnily tradition for the Ecclestones.
“My son James has also played for the county,” said Paul.
“So for Sophie to follow is wonderful.”
She played in Cheshire’s last match, a victory against Wales U13s and scored five not-out before their 30 overs ran out, Cheshire scoring 110-7.
She then was thrown in as part of the bowling line-up and kept her deliveries tight, conceding just eight runs from four overs as Wales scored 91.
