BOUGHTON Hall duo Warren Goodwin and Jack Williams inspired Cheshire to a second win on the spin.

Goodwin contributed 172 runs to the victory over Wiltshire on his club’s home ground, while Williams’ accurate bowling helped seal it in a tense final day.

The 34-run win makes it two in two for Cheshire in the MCCA Championship Western Division.

Two days of high winds make conditions tough for both sides in an enthralling game that ebbed and flowed throughout.

Cheshire only grabbed the initiative late on the third afternoon.

Stand-in skipper Danny Woods said: “It was a great victory, particularly pleasing as we had to work so hard to get it on a great Chester track.

“We really had to dig deep.”

Woods won the toss and chose to bat. But an impressive attack led by Tahir Afridi made life tough for the Cheshire batsmen until Goodwin went into overdrive striking a fine 104 – his seventh Championship hundred.

His stand of 150 with Khalid Sawas (62) moved the total to 212 before Lee Dixon (62) and Danny Berry (51) and Williams (23) boosted it to 394ao.

On the second day Cheshire struggled as Ed Kilbee (71), Henry Langford (54), Tom Morton (63) and Ashur Morrison (65) piled on the runs and they closed on 315 (Adam Syddall 4-69).

Goodwin then continued his fine work with a sparkling 63 and Williams added 31 but Wiltshire restricted their hosts to 174 (Afridi 5-88).

Chasing 254, Kilbee again dug in for Wiltshire but once he’d gone for 56 with the score at 101-4, Cheshire sensed victory.

Williams’s nagging accuracy was augmented by a hostile spell of pace bowling by Kirwin but there were only 14 balls left when Woods (6-47) fittingly took the final wicket, leaving Wiltshire 219ao.
