Chester RUFC director of rugby Nic Corrigan doesn’t want his side to dwell on the disappointment of defeat at Caldy.

Chester held a seven-point lead at one stage but failed to build on that in the second period and the Wirral club took full advantage to claim a 21-15 win.

Corrigan’s side entertain Hull in National League Two North on Saturday (3pm) and he has told his squad to look forwards, not backwards.

Corrigan said: “It was quite an empty feeling after the defeat at Caldy.

“There’s really only ourselves to blame and ultimately I head up the team and the responsibility is mine to fix things.

“We were very disappointed with the result and we took some time to find the key learning points for us to work on and now the focus is on Hull.

Chester took the lead at Caldy through Pete Rees, who crossed out wide after Tom Foden’s good work although the conversion missed the mark.

Caldy reduced the lead with a three-pointer but Foden added another unconverted score to put his side 10-3 ahead.

Chester spurned a few chances to add to the lead and the home side closed to 10-9 at the break with two more penalties.

Caldy went into the lead three minutes into the second half with a converted try to make the score 16-10.

Chester might have regained the lead but for some wayward kicking.

Rees’ second try of the game on 65 minutes gave them hope, the missed conversion leaving them 16-15 behind.

Caldy held firm under pressure and an unconverted score with five minutes to go sealed the win for the hosts.

Corrigan, whose side started the season with a 23-17 success at home to Huddersfield, hope to make it back-to-back home wins against Hull.

Corrigan said: “Hull have got quite a few players on loan from Rotherham through the links between the clubs and have Geoff Wappett as coach.

“Hull will bring a very exciting brand of rugby to Hare Lane and they beat us last season at their place so they will be coming here for a result.

“We are carrying a couple of knocks and will rotate the squad because the season is a marathon and not a sprint.”

Chester 2nds recorded a 38-24 win over Sale in the Bateman BMW Premier League and visit Rochdale 2nds this weekend.

Christleton have started the season well and had too much for visiting Anselmians 2nds in Division Three South, running out 36-16 winners.

Christleton will be aiming to make it three wins a row this weekend with a trip to Sandbach 3rds.

Helsby entertained Oldershaw in South Lancs and Cheshire Division Three but crashed to a 41-7 defeat and travel to Oxton Parkonians on Saturday.
