NIC Corrigan praised his side for having the ‘backbone’ to recover from a disappointing loss to Caldy with a comprehensive 32-0 win over Hull.

Corrigan’s men had to contend with some good Hull pressure at Hare Lane, particularly in the first half, but coped admirably and took charge in the second period, running in five tries in total.

Director of rugby Corrigan had urged his side to put the 21-15 defeat at Caldy behind them and was pleased to see them take heed of his words.

Corrigan said: “I think we showed some of the backbone and the character we are looking for.

“It was our defence that won us the game. Hull were quite sprightly about their chances before the game with had four on loan from Rotherham.

“There were times when we had to hang in there but to come away with a nil tells you a lot about our performance but like the Caldy game it’s one result and it doesn’t make a season.

Hull created some promising openings in the first half but couldn’t make them count and Chester took a 12-0 lead into the break thanks to Matt Walsh and Pete Rees tries.

Walsh got his second following the restart and there were further scores for flanker Will Bown and number eight Guy Ford.

Fly-half Will Goodwin added two conversions and a penalty to wrap up the win for the National League Two North club.

On Saturday, Chester travel to Yorkshire to take on Otley, who are coming off the back of a 32-3 loss at Hull Ionians.

Corrigan has brought tighthead prop Rob Fitzgerald back into the starting side and James Whitelock Wainwright returns to the squad on the bench.

“We’ve got a few bumps and bruises and we’ll continue to rotate the squad,” said Corrigan.

“We went to Otley on the back of four losses last season and our performance defined because we showed the character we had about us.

“Otley have been in this league for a long time and have the ability to be the best team in Yorkshire if they want to be so I’m interested to see them and to see how we respond to having a good win.

“I want us to be one of the best teams in the league and for us to do that we will need to be in the top-three at Christmas.”

Chester 2nds celebrated a fine 49-24 win at Rochdale in the Bateman BMW Premier League and welcome Macclesfield 2nds to Hare Lane on Saturday.

Christleton produced a battling performance but fell to a narrow 20-17 defeat at Sandbach in Division Three South.

Tries from wing Daniel Maiden and centre Gareth Roberts, and two conversions and a three-pointer from Jim Taylor put them into a 17-0 lead at the break.

Sandbach emerged for the second half in determined mood and scored three tries and a late penalty to snatch the win.

Prop John Marsden was named as man of the match for the Swans.

Helsby went down 31-7 at Oxton Parkonians in South Lancs and Cheshire Division Three and travel to Isle of Man club Ramsey this weekend.
