Chester FC have swooped to re-sign midfielder Ryan Lloyd on loan from League One side Port Vale.
Lloyd, 22, spent much of last season on loan at the Blues from the Valiants after joining in November, playing 22 times, and caught the eye with a series of impressive and energetic performances.
Lloyd, who can operate either on the left of midfield or in a more central role, signed a new deal with Vale during the summer but has found himself down the pecking order following the arrival of manager Bruno Ribeiro and a host of new signings.
And McCarthy has been quick to act to bring back Lloyd to the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium on loan to bolster his squad and create further competition for places in midfield.
"I'm a big fan of Ryan from last year and Port Vale have signed quite a few new players so we have taken him and we think he strengthens the squad," said McCarthy.
"He will push people on but he will have to work hard to get into the squad at the moment but he will put pressure on other people which is what we want.
"We'll always have some disappointed players and that is never an easy part of the job but me and Sharpy (assistant manager Ian Sharps) want that and we know that means we get better performances every time we go out."
Lloyd could go straight in to the Chester squad that plays host to Maidstone United in the National League tomorrow (3pm).
