Neil Young has warned his players that life in the Skrill Premier will not get any easier after their memorable derby win – and he is bracing himself for a second testing month.

The Chester FC boss was as relieved as anyone to break the club’s five-match losing streak with Saturday’s 2-0 win at Wrexham.

On paper, the Blues look to have a slightly easier sequence of fixtures through September – starting with this Saturday’s home match against fellow part-timers Dartford (3pm).

But Young said: “People said our first six games were tough. I keep telling people every game in this division is tough.

“So let’s not think we’re in for an easy ride this month because we’ve got more part-time teams to play. Some of those part-time teams, like Dartford, had good finishes last year.”

Chester opened up with losses to Barnet, Hereford, Woking, Kidderminster and Forest Green, before winning at the sixth attempt on Saturday.

They kick off September by hosting Dartford at the Deva before taking on Salisbury, Macclesfield, Grimsby, Gateshead and FC Halifax Town.

“We’ve had Dartford scouted and I’ve got a DVD on them,” said Young. “They’re a typical Conference side and they’re part-time, like ourselves. They had a fantastic season last year, finishing eighth or ninth. That was a massive achievement to be fair to them. They’re a good yardstick really for the likes of ourselves.”

Ashley Williams begins a three-match ban on Saturday for his sending off in the Wrexham game.

Young described the midfielder’s dismissal – for a slap on Bradley Reid – as an act of ‘stupidity’, adding: “It’ll be dealt with internally as per the fine process we have here.”

On-loan Sunderland man Jordan Laidler is a doubt due to a calf injury.

The transfer deadline passed quietly for Young on Monday, with no players leaving the club. The Chester boss had been looking to bring in a striker and will reassess his options once the window for loan signings opens next week.

As part of Saturday’s Non-League Day celebrations, fans under the age of 16 will be allowed into the Dartford game free of charge – if accompanied by an adult.

Blues director Jeff Banks said: “It’s a great chance for children to come and experience a Chester FC match for free. We’re always trying to build up our younger supporter base, and would love to see as many as possible take advantage of this offer. Hopefully they’ll like what they see and come back next time too!”
