Cheshire Phoenix emerged with two defeats from a tough-looking opening weekend to the British Basketball League season.

A 99-85 home loss to Newcastle Eagles on Sunday (September 25) followed them being edged out 88-85 in overtime by Worcester Wolves 48 hours earlier.

The Eagles, who finished second in the regular season last year, had Scott Martin to thank as he led the way with a 28-point haul, although all nine of their players got on the scoresheet.

After a tightly contested first period, the Eagles began to edge away, putting together a 16-2 run across quarters to lead by 12 at 22-34.

Cheshire scored seven straight either side of half-time to close within three, but would not get closer. Earl Brown led the hosts' scoring with 27 points, and a further 21 came from Jamell Anderson.

It was a tighter game at Worcester last Friday.

The Wolves, who finished fourth in the regular BBL season in 2015-16, had trailed by 16 points early in the fourth quarter before hitting Nix with an amazing fightback.

Cheshire looked in control at 69-54, but the home side put together an incredible 22-2 run as Andrew Bachman netted three triples in the dramatic spell.

However, there was another twist as the Nix wiped out a 78-74 deficit to force overtime and led 85-82 inside the final minute of the extra period before triples from Bachman and Danny Huffor secured a thrilling win for the hosts.

Brown led the scoring for Nix, with 21 points.
