A SEA of black and yellow washed over one corner of Liverpool’s ECHO Arena on Wednesday as the BiG Storage Cheshire Jets soared back into the play-off hunt, writes ALEC DOYLE.
More than 1,000 Jets fans – many decked out in the club’s colours – made the trip across the River Mersey to watch their team take on Everton Tigers in a game screened live to a global audience on Setanta Sports 2. They enjoyed a night to remember as the Jets claimed a 103-80 victory in front of a crowd of 5,800 – one of the biggest seen in the BBL in years.
Andrew Donaldson, a partner in club sponsors BiG Storage, said: “We outsung Everton, out-branded them and on the court we totally outplayed them. It was a great game, hopefully good enough to encourage fans to come back and watch us at the Northgate Arena.”
Donaldson and a group of volunteers arranged to offer hundreds of cut-price tickets to 72 Cheshire schools for the game, and also organised Jets T-shirts and signs to make sure the Chester club’s presence was felt on Merseyside.
“It was a lot of hard work and the efforts of the volunteers were invaluable,” said Donaldson. “There was a point before the game where I thought ‘never again’ but it really was worth it.”
Everton Tigers usually play at the 500-capacity Greenbank Sports Academy, but they upgraded to the ECHO Arena as a one-off venture when they discovered the game would be shown on live TV.
