In front of a packed Northgate Arena on Sunday night, the Nix secured their fourth triumph of the BBL campaign.
Hometown hero Devan Bailey made a critical jump shot with five seconds left and drew the foul and the Great Britain international drained the resulting extra point from the free-throw line to see John Coffino’s men home to victory.
In truth, the Nix should have been out of sight far earlier in the contest having led their North East visitors 50-38 at the half-time break.
They had stretched their lead to 16 points in the third quarter before the Wildcats rallied and worked their way back into the contest as the home side turned the ball over too often.
When Odiba Attah drained a three and Chris Jones picked an easy two off the Nix inbound pass immediately after to give the Wildcats a two point lead with two minutes 25 seconds left on the clock in the third quarter, it looked as though the home side may be made to pay for their mistakes.
But they held firm in the and regained their composure at both ends of the court to close out the game to leave the Northgate rocking at the final buzzer following a brilliant clutch play from Great Britain star Bailey, who claimed eight points from the bench.
Former Duke ace Taylor King was the high-point man for the Nix as he drained 23 and grabbed six rebounds to continue his impressive form while Julius Hodge and Demond Watt, who was presented with his gold ball for winning Molten BBL Player of the Month for October prior to the contest, both claimed 12 points.
