BILLY Singleton hailed the 'legendary' Northgate Arena crowd for lending plenty of vocal support to the Jets' cause on Sunday.

Jets followed up Saturday night's 96-88 win at Brighton Bears with a pulsating home victory over title-chasers Sheffield Sharks.

The weekend double was the perfect tonic to a run of five straight defeats and put Chester firmly back on course for the play-offs.

Speaking after Sunday's 104-94 triumph, Jets head coach Singleton said: 'Oh my heck, the crowd was tremendous! The Northgate crowd is legendary. They really showed up in a big way and gave us support. We're hoping we continue to get that support from them.'

Jets' clashes with the Sharks have a history of being lively affairs and Singleton added: 'It's the old match up! You've got to look to Westside Story - the Jets and the Sharks. The

rivalry's there, there's a lot of history there and it's always an exciting and fun match up.'

Jets trailed 27-24 after the first quarter thanks to five three-pointers by Sharks captain Iain McKinney, but had forged ahead 51-25 by half time.

While a 7-0 Sheffield run brought the visitors back into the match, Chester scored the final three points of the third quarter to lead 79-72.

Sheffield regained the lead at 92-91 early in the fourth, but a 13-3 run to close the match by the Jets proved to be the difference between the teams.

Phil Gilbert led the way for Jets with 32 points, with Shawn Myers adding 28 and Singleton 18.

At Brighton 24 hours earlier, Jets opened up a 46-40 half time lead.

Bears stayed in touch but an early 9-0 charge in the fourth gave Jets a 71-81 lead that proved to be unassailable for the home side.

Gilbert was the hero, hitting most of the important points on his way to a personal 28.
