RISING star Matt Schneck is the first of the new names Paul Smith has secured for Cheshire Jets’ forthcoming BBL Championship campaign.
The 6ft 9in Wisconsin-born centre earned All-American honours three times – winning selection for an honorary national “squad” as one of the season’s stand-out performers – before graduating from St Cloud State University in Minnesota earlier this year.
Now the 22-year-old scoring and rebound specialist is stepping up into the professional ranks, he has identified the Jets as the perfect place to learn his craft.
“I was working with Scorers1st Sports Management, in Germany,” said Schneck. “We were considering teams in the Swiss league until we took a good look at the BBL.
“It is a better league for me because of the standard and to be able to sign for a team that made two finals last season is a big deal for me.”
Schneck is not boastful about his own ability but says he wants to be part of a Jets side that become contenders for all the BBL’s major honours in 2010-11.
“I have played against pro players before at competitions in Las Vegas but I am coming to shape and hone my skills and hopefully contribute to a successful team,” he said.
Jets head coach Smith said: “We are happy about Matt joining our organisation for next season and he will be perfect for double-double figures in this league.”
Schneck joins a Jets roster which includes recent re-signings Colin O’Reilly and Calvin Davis.
