CHESHIRE Jets began their British Basketball League campaign with an 85-74 defeat at defending champions Newcastle Eagles on Friday night.

Jets won the first and second quarters to lead 42-38 at the break, but their hopes of a stunning success were hit when forward Calvin Davis suffered an ankle injury.

That knocked Paul Smith’s side out of their stride and the Eagles took full advantage to take the win.

James Hamilton (22), Paul Peterson (13), Shawn Myers (12) and Chez Marks (12) scored the lion’s share of the points for Jets, whose first home game of the season comes against Milton Keynes Lions tonight. Tip-off at the Northgate Arena is 5.30pm.
