TWO games remain, one victory is required if the Jets want to secure fourth spot in the BBL Championship and a home tie in the playoffs.

Their opponents for this weekend’s double-header are the league’s bottom teams – London Capital away on Saturday and Essex Pirates at the Northgate on Sunday – but head coach Paul Smith is taking nothing for granted.

“Every game is tough at this stage as teams have been playing together for a while,” said Smith.

“We only need one win to guarantee fourth place but that is not enough, we want to win both and go into the playoffs on a high.”

This season the re-formed Jets have regained their reputation as a force within the BBL by reaching both cup finals.

Now they go into the final weekend of the regular season having won eight in 10 in the BBL Championship despite injuries to key players in the last few weeks.

Shawn Myers was the latest, missing out on the Jets defeat at home to Newcastle Eagles on Sunday and their win at Plymouth Raiders midweek.

“I won’t risk Shawn this weekend,” said Smith. “If he is right, he will play but if he isn’t I will save him for the playoffs.”

The Jets’ other casualty, James Hamilton, has missed the last month of games and is not certain to be fit for the playoffs.

“The playoffs are James’ target and that is the earliest we can expect to see him,” said Smith.

“But we played well on Tuesday against Plymouth with only six players.

“Calvin Davis is looking good after his struggles this season and fitness-wise the squad is in good shape.

“Regardless of who’s available we want to go out and win this weekend to give our home fans something to cheer on Sunday.”
