SHAWN Myers, the man who lit up BiG Storage Cheshire Jets’ season stuttering season when he returned for his third spell at the club, has left for Australia.

The popular Trinidadian has been an influential player for the Jets since re-signing for them last October, winning the BBL Molten player of the month award in his first month back.

But Myers has not played since breaking and dislocating his finger in the BBL Trophy defeat to Newcastle on February 2, so Jets have agreed to release him from his contract early.

Myers is now free to re-join his old club, the Geelong Supercats, and he is heading back to Australia with the aim of regaining full fitness in time for the start of the SEABL Conference campaign.

Jets director Pete Hawkins said: “The management and fans alike all owe Shawn a big thank you for his efforts with the Jets this season.

“Before he signed for us we were really feeling our way, but his arrival made a real difference to the team. As he leaves he lies second in the BBL standings for rebounds with 11.3 per game, fourth in scoring with 23.9 points per game and with an impressive 73.75% free throw percentage.

“There is no doubt he will be missed in our final thrust towards a play-off place, but he leaves for Australia with our very best wishes and the hope that he may be back with the Jets soon.”

Head coach Paul Smith added: “It is not easy to put a value on the contribution that Shawn has made this season. He just goes on putting up these amazing figures – points scored, defensive rebounds – all the little things that are only noticed when he is not around.

“Thanks to BiG Storage’s continued sponsorship, we have been able to start internal discussions about the formation of the squad for next year and there are a number of players on my list that I would love to persuade to come back to the Jets – one of those is Shawn.”
