Andrew Donaldson is determined to make 2014 ‘the year of the Phoenix’.

After a tough start to the season, the Cheshire Phoenix chairman believes the club is now in a strong position to challenge for BBL honours.

Head coach John Lavery has steered the Nix on a six-match winning run. He hopes to extend the streak to eight with wins over Newcastle Eagles and Leicester Riders this weekend.

Chairman Donaldson said: “We are back, re-energised and ready to make 2014 the year of the Phoenix. We have learned a lot of lessons this season and sometimes comment has been made, but we have stood together as one with the players and our head coach and come through the other side as a stronger team for it.”

The Nix travel to Newcastle tomorrow (7.30pm) for a league game before hosting Leicester at the Northgate Arena on Sunday in the BBL Trophy (5.30pm).

The Riders, fresh from beating Newcastle in the BBL Cup final last weekend, have won their last eight matches.

Donaldson said: “I can’t wait to see us take on Leicester, a team with their own eight-game streak. It promises to be a key game with the Nix making a late push for the upper-tier playoff places and Riders looking to make it a second successive season of domination.”
