A proud Calum McIntyre lavished praise on his giant-killing Chester FC side after they pulled off an even bigger FA Youth Cup shock by knocking out Bolton Wanderers.

The Blues young guns side set-up last night's memorable Lookers Vauxhall Stadium clash with an historic 1-0 home victory over Fleetwood Town.

But they surpassed that achievement as goals from Nathan Brown and Connor Rowbottom secured a stunning 2-0 victory over Wanderers.

Bolton, managed by former Chester City loanee Nicky Spooner, were white hot favourites to progress.

They were a Category One academy until last year and currently play in the second tier of the Under-18 Professional Development League alongside fellow Category Two clubs like Leeds United and Nottingham Forest.

But McIntyre always believed Chester could cause another upset.

And, roared on by a 580-strong crowd, his belief proved well founded as the Blues deservedly sealed their spot in the third round for the first time in the reformed club's history.

McIntyre said: "There aren't really plaudits which will do these players justice for what they produced tonight.

"Please do not understate the gulf on paper. No-one really gave us a chance tonight if we're all really honest. They didn't in the Fleetwood game and they didn't tonight.

"But we went out there with a game plan, executed it, and been better at what we did than what they did.

"I saw it described as a glamour tie but for us it was a game of football, 11 v 11, and a chance for us to go and carry out a game plan that played to our strengths.

"And we did that."

Brown, whose superb free kick downed Fleetwood in the first round, opened the scoring in the 38th minute and, after the outstanding James Hodges made a string of saves to keep Wanderers out, Rowbottom raced away to complete it in injury-time.

McIntyre hailed the win as a result of an 'incredible team effort'.

But the 23-year-old, who is also Chester's academy head coach, was particularly delighted for Rowbottom.

McIntyre, who along with his coaching staff identified Bolton's high defensive line as a potential weakness, said: "Connor Rowbottom has been at this football club since he was 13.

"When you go out there's a picture on the wall of the first ever group academy photo and Connor is the only player from his original age group, the under-13s, still here and he has gone and scored a goal at the Harry Mac end to put Chester FC into the third round of the FA Youth Cup.

"I could not be more delighted for that young man."

In the third round the Blues will travel to Broxbourne Borough, whose first team compete in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division, after they avoided a potential clash with a Premier League or Championship academy side, who have now entered the competition.

The third-round as it stands is: Middlesbrough v Rotherham United, Liverpool v Crystal Palace, Broxbourne Borough v Chester FC, Burnley v Bradford City, Watford v Norwich City, Gillingham v Oxford City, Huddersfield Town v AFC Wimbledon or Bristol Rovers, Reading v Manchester City, Swindon Town or AFC Sudbury v QPR, Shrewsbury Town v Accrington Stanley, Portsmouth v Newcastle United, Leicester City v Leyton Orient, Brighton & Hove Albion v Derby County, Exeter City or MK Dons v Wigan Athletic, Arsenal v Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End v Sheffield United, Oldham Athletic v Birmingham City, Swansea City v Wolves, Sunderland v Burton Albion, Fulham v Mansfield Town, Cambridge United v AFC Bournemouth, Barnsley v Carlisle United, Chelsea v Cardiff City, Everton v Tranmere Rovers, Stoke City v West Ham United, Nottingham Forest v Ipswich Town, West Brom v Yeovil Town, Hull City v Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur v Stevenage, Bristol City v Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday v Luton Town or Dagenham & Redbridge, Manchester United v Southampton.

Ties must be played before Saturday, December 17.
