AN all-female roller derby team based in Chester and Ellesmere Port is appealing for ‘fresh meat’.

The Cheshire Hellcats is a self-funded team that says it strives to spread the message of 'strong, confident and active women' through the sport, promoting a positive body image and supporting each other through training, which, at times can be both physically and mentally challenging.

In order to play, each team member undertakes thorough training to meet a minimum skills set, enabling them to skate safely and confidently in full-contact games.

A spokesperson for the team said: “Skating under pseudonyms or stage names, allows us to escape from our everyday friendly personas to hit hard on the track, and you’ll find a colourful collection of names adding to the theatre of the sport.

“Proud of our city and its people, we are also looking forward to raising awareness in Chester’s second Pride Festival on Saturday, October 3 this year.

“We are now recruiting for new members or ‘fresh meat’, with an intake starting from May 19. Regardless of your age, as long as you are over 18, and ability, we welcome people from all walks of life and invite you to get in touch! We’re also planning on being in Grovesnor Park this Saturday afternoon, so why not pop along and find out more?”

On May 16, many members of the team are scheduled to take part in the Skate Mania half marathon in Preston Arena to raise team funds, as well as awareness and funds for Chester Women’s Aid, a local charity close to the team’s heart.
