Green fingered gardeners in Northwich, Winsford and Frodsham have seen their efforts recognised in Weaver Vale Housing Trust’s annual garden competition.

Customers from across the trust’s neighbourhoods entered the annual garden competition which celebrates the hard work so many put into making their community attractive.

Best overall garden was awarded to Walter and Barbara Sant; best patio garden went to Frank and Barbara Holden of Winsford; Alan Scott and Paul Burnet, also of Winsford, scooped best communal garden for their transformation of their shared space; and the winners of best independent living apartment garden were Sylvia Goulborn, Elsie Holker and Tony Lee from Wakefield Court.

The extensive range of flowers, magnificent hanging baskets and variety of vegetables made 86-year-old Mr Sant, of Swan Grove, Lower Peover, an outstanding winner.

It’s the second year running that he has won the accolade.

Mrs Sant said: “Walter has done really well and it made his day when he received the letter to say he had won.”

The gardens were judged by Weaver Vale Housing Trust contract officer Sarah Lawless and Martin Neighbour, contracts manager for The Landscape Group, the grounds maintenance contractors for the trust.

All winners received a framed certificate and vouchers for B&Q or Love to Shop worth £200.

The judges were joined by the trust’s chief executive, Steve Jennings, and environment administrative assistant Emma Sandbach to present the awards.

Mr Jennings said: “Each year the standard of entries gets higher, and we always enjoy seeing the huge variety of flowers, shrubs and vegetables our customers cultivate. This year was no exception with some marvellous gardens on display.

“Great looking gardens can really transform a community and we want to thank all our customers who take great care of their outdoor space, no matter how large or small their gardens may be.”
