Jeff CLARKE, Conservative

CHESTER resident Jeff Clarke was selected as the Conservative Party's parliamentary candidate for Wirral South in 2007.

Mr Clarke, who studied law and economics at university, has been a practising criminal law barrister for more than 20 years and works mainly in the Wirral and Liverpool.

A husband and father, he has been a Councillor in the city for the past five years and has a strong interest in law and order issues and the economy.

Campaigns in which Mr Clarke has been involved include fighting against the closure of post offices in Spital and Lower Heswall and libraries, leisure centres and community buildings in the Wirral and a petition for school crossing patrols to be reinstated.

He claims to hold family and community values, as well as those relating to personal responsibility and mutual respect for one another, in particularly high regard.

Alison MCGOVERN, Labour

ART gallery trustee Alison McGovern is the Labour Party's parliamentary candidate for Wirral South. 

Born in Clatterbridge Hospital and brought up in Bromborough, Ms McGovern has served as a local councillor and deputy leader of her 29-strong group of councillors

She has also worked in policy and public affairs in the rail industry and cultural sector.and been a trustee of a public art gallery and a leisure services charity

If elected, she pledges to campaign for better employment provision in the Wirral, to improve local hospitals and to protect quality of life in the constituency.

Jamie SADDLER, Liberal Democrat

KEEN sportsman Jamie Saddler is the Liberal Democrats' parliamentary candidate for Wirral South.

He has lived in the constituency since the age of six and recently graduated from Leeds University with a degree in Political Sudies and a masters in British Politics and Parliamentary Studies.

A party member since 2005, Saddler has assisted with various local causes, as well as fronting a campaign to combat discrimination and bullying in schools.

He is a member of Liberty, Amnesty International, Unlock Democracy and the Electoral Reform Society and, if elected, plans to concentrate his efforts on education, law and order, the environment and energy policy, civil liberties, international relations, the constitution and political reform.

In his spare time, he supports Everton Football Club and Lancashire County Cricket Club and likes reading, writing and the odd spot of cooking.

David SCOTT, UKIP

ABERDEEN University graduate David Scott is the UKIP parliamentary candidate for Wirral South.

Mr Scott, who also stood for the constituency in the 2005 elections, believes that over the last few years frequently greedy MPs have too often allowed British power to be arrested by EU politicians.

His policies include helping to restore "common sense decision making" to parliament, free trade with all countries, less government involvement in the day-to-day lives of citizens and ending EU subsidies.

He has two grown-up children and is the current chair of the party's Chester Branch, where he was involved in producing UKIP's policy with regards to energy and the environment .

The 60 year old grew up in Liverpool and was educated at Quarry Bank High School - the same school that John Lennon attended - before gaining a degree in psychology and becoming a teacher.

Now a lecturer at the University of Chester (formerly Chester College), he also has a degree from the Open University and a doctorate from the University of Liverpool.
