Mr Brighton, who also stood for election in the constituency in 2005, spoke to the Chronicle this evening as his month-long campaign enters its final hours.

He said: "It's been a very clean fight in Alyn and Deeside, and I have great respect for all the other candidates."

On the final day of campaigning Mr Brighton, who finished third in 2005, visited polling stations throughout the constituency.

He believes turnout could be up as much as 10% from the last election.

"There's a great deal of interest in this election," he said. "And that's good for democracy."

And he hasn't given up hope his party could spring a shock.

He said: "If you enter this kind of work one obviously wants to win. I'm a lifelong Lib Dem and I want to see the party thrive.

"The feeling is we've grown in strength. Now it's down to the electorate to decide."
