LABOUR’S Derek Twigg sealed a landslide victory for his party to secure Halton, increasing his majority by 2,383 votes compared to the 2005 General Election.

The incumbent Mr Twigg picked up 23,843 votes, shrugging off the challenge of closest rival Conservative Ben Jones who received 8,339, while Liberal Democrat Frank Harasiwka polled 5,718.

The BNP’s Andrew Taylor picked up 1,563 votes, with UKIP’s John Moore polling 1,228, and the Greens’ Jim Craig 647.

Mr Twigg said he was ‘humbled’ at Halton’s show of support.

He said: “It’s amazing, and I’m just determined now to fight even harder for Halton until the next election, whenever that may be.”

Ben Jones, said: “It’s been a pleasure campaigning here and speaking to people on the doorstep, and I wish Derek all the best for the future.”

Voter turnout was 60.2%, an increase on 53.1% on the 2005 General Election.
