A COUNCIL chief has saluted the Halton Borough Council election staff for ‘delivering democracy’.

Halton Borough Council chief executive David Parr said workers ensured the elections ran without any problems.

Mr Parr added he could not comment on the 257 spoiled ballots cast for the Kingsway ward.

He said: “It would be easy to speculate on why they were spoiled but not wise for me as the returning officer to do so.

“Our ballots ran extremely smoothly and we have ensured that democracy has been delivered in Halton.

“I would like to give my greatest thanks to our election staff and all those who carried out the count process.

“Also I would like to thank the candidates who also behaved in an exemplary manner and can hold their heads up high.

“They have shown democracy to be something we should be proud of.”
