Ssangyong is in the process of gaining type approval for the Chairman W – a luxury saloon based on the Mercedes S-Class.
The company has so far imported just a single example to the UK, saying ‘we simply wanted to bring one over here to have a talking point.’ But if the demand is there, it is open to the idea of putting a limited number on sale.
The S-Class forming the Chairman W’s underpinnings is the W140 model – which first saw the light of day a quarter of a century ago. It’s powered by a 3.6-litre petrol engine producing 246bhp and 253lb ft, with all-wheel drive and a seven-speed auto box that’s also sourced from Merc.
Equipment levels, which are as high as you’d expect, include air springs, power seats all round and an 8” screen in the rear. The Chairman W is the highest-selling luxury saloon back home in Korea – where it’s priced at the equivalent of about £40k.
