We all want to save the planet, but we only want to do it if it means saving money. That’s why things like company car tax are weighted in favour of the cleanest models.

Models like the Passat 1.6 TDI Bluemotion. This is based on the standard 1.6 TDI but has things like a lower ride height and enhanced aerodynamics to help it get the most from every drop of fuel.

Inside, it’s based on the entry level S-spec Passat and includes kit like air-con, DAB, Bluetooth and a 6.5” multimedia interface. As with the rest of the range, it’s very roomy front and rear – though being a saloon, it’s not as practical as the big hatchbacks in the market.

Material quality is top-notch for this kind of car, however. In fact, it’s one of the prime reasons why you’d buy the Passat instead of, say, the otherwise closely related Skoda Superb Greenline.

Another of the modifications made to this particular Passat to help keep its emissions down is a taller set of ratios in the six-speed manual box. This means you spend a lot of time working the clutch in traffic or when you’re trying to get somewhere in a hurry. The upside is that it sits happily at lower than usual revs on the motorway – and, so long as the capacity for hard acceleration is something you’re happy to be without, there’s nothing here to trouble you.

Further good news is that even on its shorter-stroke springs, the Bluemotion rides comfortably enough. In fact, if you’re willing to accept a slightly heavier-footed response to bumps in lieu of tighter body control over crests, you could say it’s better than standard.

Refinement isn’t as good if you do try to push it, however. But it certainly has the handling skills to answer any of the questions this engine might ask.

Talking of answers, the one you’ve been waiting for if you’re seriously considering a car like the Bluemotion is this: 76.3mpg and 95g/km.

So there are some cheap running costs to be enjoyed here, and as we mentioned at the outset that’s pretty much essential if you want people to buy into the idea of saving the planet.

Problem is, the standard Passat 1.6 SE is cheaper to buy privately (and only £180 a year more if you’re a company driver), and though it’s not quite as fuel efficient it doesn’t have the aforementioned funny gearing. But it does have auto braking, cruise, park assist, power seats and dusk and rain sensors – and for better or for worse, that adds up to a strong argument against putting the planet first.
