Former Premier League and England footballer Michael Owen has opened a new sports pavilion at Abbey Gate College.

The BT Sports pundit unveiled the new building alongside headteacher Tracy Pollard and founding governor Maria Heywood.

The building provides the Saighton, Chester college with modern changing areas and showering facilities, a valuable multi-purpose teaching and activities space, and a state of the art cardio-vascular gymnasium. It also gives the school a community space.

Tracey Pollard said: “The opening of the teaching and sports pavilion marks an important point in our journey at Abbey Gate College in creating better sporting facilities for the benefit of all our pupils; from the very youngest in foundation stage to the oldest in the sixth form.

“Our desire and vision is to extend the provision of sport for all age groups, all year round and to create a culture of being active, healthy and happy.”
