Winnington Park 3 Broughton Park 19

WINNINGTON put one foot in the South Lancs and Cheshire League at Burrows Hill on Saturday.

Only by winning their three remaining matches – and Vale of Lune losing all theirs – can they hope to survive.

They kicked off with eight colts in the side and they had to defend manfully, gradually sustaining attacks of their own.

ARCHER BULL’S EYE: A half-hour has gone when they took the lead through Nathan Archer’s penalty, but with time running quickly towards the interval they were back on the defensive and this time they cracked.

Broughton drove over from a line-out and O’Brien added the conversion.

After being the better team for much of the first half Park struggled to maintain the momentum.

They showed only glimpses of attacking flair and it was usually from deep position that did not threaten.

BREAKDOWN: Midway into the second period Winnington realised they had to throw caution to the wind, but when a promising move involving the stalwart Patterson brothers (Chris and Mark) broke down, Broughton were quick to pounce on the ball, showed good hands and doubled their score.

They added a further try in the final minute, but the scoreline flattered Broughton and Park had performances of man on the match Ryan McGibbon, Alfred Evans, Tim Charlton, Joe Robins, and Bob Sant to be proud of.

Other scores: Sefton 2nds 31 Park 2nds 5 (Jonny Evans try); Carrington 10 Park 3rds 26 (Joe Ellis 2, Dave Caine, Stuart Clarke tries; Matt Thurlwell 3 cons); Cheshire U13s Festival – Park 5 (George Cooper try) Altrincham 13; Park 0 Caldy 15; Park 7 (Cooper try; Michael Annells con) Wirral 7; U11s – Park beat Anselmians 56-15 (Jack Milne 6, Henry Melrose, Jona; U8s series v Anselmians 5-7, 5-5, 9-8, 9-9.

Winnington Senior Colts have drawn Caldy away and the Junior Colts have been pitched against Leigh away in the Halbro Cups.

Yorkshire beat Cheshire 18-12 in the Inter Counties Colts match at Burrows Hill on Sunday.
