Subject: State of Winsford

The recent report in the Chronicle is alarming and I share the author’s concerns. A town now larger than Northwich with over 30 000 population has a shopping centre with 18 empty shops. Where are all the shoppers going to anyway? I can remember a vibrant town with no empty shops at all. Well empty shops encourages vandalism too. What is the council doing about this sorry state of affairs? Britain was once heralded as a nation of shopkeepers – not any more.

Everyone wants to go to university, live in a detached house (we are swallowing up vast areas of Green Belt to build more houses whilst knocking old terraces down because no one wants them) and generally live a good life. It doesn’t matter that not everyone is capable of astrophysics or that someone needs to empty the bins, we’re all being told that we deserve better. Personally I feel that this shift in society is linked to the increase in cases of stress and depression.

They have the heart, they have the energy, but they will have the same excuse that is given in trade union meetings when there is a call for industrial action, “hang on a bit, I can’t do that, I have a mortgage to pa”, ie, the wider picture is less important than the needs of today. So their hearts and energy are focused on keeping what they have strived to obtain. I can’t remember what the term was that we used in the Army, but it was something about Jack and being all right.
