A KEEN fundraiser who is planning to cycle the entire length of the UK, has been nominated for a Your Champions award.

Alan Critchley, 47, of Whitby, will power peddle 874 miles from Land’s End to John o’ Groats later this month to raise money for The Lymphoma Association and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

Alan, who is attempting the feat with his friends Chris Midgley, Mark Wharton and Mark Harrison, is taking on an even bigger challenge by compressing the trip, which usually takes 12-14 days to complete, into just eight days.

They plan to stay off major roads in order to make it a testing mental and physical challenge.

Alan, a team leader for the facilities department at the University of Chester, was nominated by wife Ronda Critchley and his colleagues.

He is no stranger to endurance-related fundraising –in 2007 he ran the London Marathon in aid of Chester’s Hospice of the Good Shepherd.

He has personal reasons for choosing the two charities – his mother-in-law, Adele, has recently been diagnosed with leukaemia, while the father of his fellow rider, Mark Harrison, has chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) – a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Alan who also finds time to study for a degree in management and leadership at the university, said: “It’s a very nice feeling to be nominated for this, I’m very nervous about the trip though.

“We’re aiming to spend eight to 10 hours a day in the saddle, covering about 200km and 2,000m ascents. That’s the equivalent of cycling from London to Birmingham, then twice up England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, each and every day.

“Each of us has immediate family or friends that are affected by blood cancers and these charities provide excellent and much needed support to patients, carers and families.

“It will be tough going, but Mark’s dad Richard is going to be our support driver, which will remind us just how important and personal this challenge is.”

The team will set off on the challenge on Friday, September 21 and you can make a donation at www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/MarkAlanChris .
