A CHRISTMAS tree in a rural school has been planted as part of a carbon neutral project and follows a campaign to save the school.

The tiny fir joined a 22-foot Christmas tree, donated by The Forestry Commission in Delamere, at Delamere CofE Primary School.

This smaller tree has been donated following a successful balloon race, as part of the campaign to stop Delamere School closing and an environmental project for the children.

Two hundred green and yellow balloons were launched from the school. Attached to each balloon was a label asking the finder to fill in their postcode details so the children could assess its ‘carbon neutral footprint’.

Next term, children in Years 5 and 6 will plot where the balloons landed on a map of the UK and study why the balloons landed there. The effect of carbon gases on the world, the ozone layer and the effect of declining forests worldwide will form part of the project.

Steve Docking, headteacher, said: “The carbon neutral project will form part of a wider project whereby Delamere Primary School and other schools are in discussion to form an Eco Schools group.”
