PLAS Madoc youths are getting a great grounding if they are considering a career in the entertainment industry.

Following the hugely successful Wot About Us? music video project during October's half term, young people from Plas Madoc are turning their hand to being radio presenters on Calon FM at NEWI.

Thanks to an initiative between Plas Madoc Communities First, Reaching Higher-Reaching Wider and NEWI, youngsters are spending the next six weeks learning how to create a radio show from scratch.

They are being instructed in all of the aspects of making a radio programme - researching, interviewing, journalistic techniques, ethical and legal issues.

The group will also learn about the technical aspects of radio production. The end result of the project will be a live broadcast during this year's Wrexham Science Festival.

'This project has proved hugely successful,' said Lee Marsh, of Plas Madoc Communities First.

'It has enabled young people from Plas Madoc to learn new skills which do not feature in their school curriculum. The young people attending are already writing their radio show and recording voice-overs and jingles.

'The programme not only enables young people from Plas Madoc to gain an in-depth look at radio production but also lets them produce a show where they choose the topics they wish to discuss.'

The project has been funded by Reaching Higher-Reaching Wider, which aims to raise aspirations and to assist individuals in realising their potential by involving them in a wide range of projects.

The students work will be showcased during the Wrexham Science Festival from March 7-19 and will be broadcast live on Calon FM 86.7.
