CASES of cervical cancer could be cut by nearly 75% in Cheshire West thanks to a vaccination programme.

So far more than 2,000 girls across the district have been immunised with the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

It protects against the two types of HPV which cause more than 70% of cervical cancers.

In Cheshire West, NHS chiefs say uptake of the jabs is ‘extremely encouraging’.

The programme now covers girls aged 16-18.

“We urge all young women to go for a jab. It protects against most cervical cancers and is a sensible investment in their health,” says NHS health director Wendy Meredith.
