SATURDAY'S 2-2 draw with Barnet at Underhill was an opportunity lost says Wrexham manager Denis Smith.

He was less concerned with the fightback from 2-0 down in the first half, more that errors had prevented his team taking closer order in the battle for promotion from League Two.

He said: 'If we're making mistakes then I'm not happy. I'm not going to say we've done well, we shouldn't have been 2-0 down in the first place.

'Any points that you drop are points lost. You never have the opportunity again so you have to be disappointed.'

But Smith was still optimistic about the club being involved in the promotion shake-up and drew confidence from the previous occasion Wrexham went up from this division.

He said: 'We were in the position we're in now, or perhaps, lower and we ended up with an automatic place.

'Anyone who is daft enough to write us off is wrong.'

The key to success looks to be solidity in defence as the side is creating opportunities at the other end.

'In the second half on Saturday we had the chances to win. When you've got players like Mark Jones and Matt Derbyshire in the side, if you can keep it nice and tight at the back then they're always going to get chances,' said Smith.

'Derbyshire could have had a hat-trick by the end and he's done extremely well for us.'

The loan signing from Blackburn Rovers has now scored five times in four games to provide

some welcome extra firepower at a time when Wrexham were struggling for front-line options with the injuries to Jon Walters and Lee McEvilly.

Bury are the visitors to the Racecourse tomorrow and Smith prefers not to take their league position - they are currently 21st - into consideration.

'You have to get away from looking at the table. There's not a lot between the sides at the bottom and those at the top in this division,' he said.

'The difference is, I know what I'm getting from the teams at the top, but those at the bottom are bringing in players left, right and centre because they want to keep their place in the league.'

Wrexham will be relying on the same squad that took on Barnet.

Darren Ferguson and Dean Bennett got longer game time than they were ready for on Saturday through force of circumstance, and both should be involved again, although Ferguson will be facing a two-game ban immediately after the Bury match.

'We could have done with that ban coming in while he was out injured,' reflected Smith.

'They both had 45 minutes at the weekend, although neither of them was fit enough for half a game, but I was determined to do something to fire us up.'

Following the home game with Bury, Wrexham travel to Macclesfield on Tuesday night, (7.45pm).
